al-Qasim ibn Malik Abu Ja'far told us: Asim ibn Kulayb told us, from Abu Burdah, who said: I went in to Abu Musa in the house of the daughter of Umm al-Fadl, and I sneezed, but he did not say 'may Allah have mercy on you' to me; then she sneezed, and he said it to her. So I went back to my mother and told her. When he came to her, she said, "My son sneezed in your presence and you did not say 'may Allah have mercy on him,' and she sneezed and you said it to her." He said, "Your son sneezed and did not praise Allah the Exalted, so I did not say it to him; and she sneezed and praised Allah the Exalted, so I said it to her. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, 'When one of you sneezes and praises Allah, say it to him; and if he does not praise Allah, Mighty and Majestic, do not say it to him.'" She said, "You have done well, you have done well."
