Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Sa'id ibn Abi Burdah, from his father, from Abu Musa, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said: "Upon every Muslim there is a duty of charity." They said, "What if he does not find anything?" He said, "He works with his hands, benefiting himself, and gives charity." They said, "What if he cannot do that or is unable?" He said, "He helps someone in need who is distressed." He said, "What if he is unable or does not do so?" He said, "He enjoins good." They said, "What if he is unable or does not do so?" He said, "He refrains from evil, for that is charity."
