Sufyan told us: al-A'mash told us, from Ibrahim, from Hammam, who said: I saw Jarir ibn Abdullah perform ablution from a water vessel and wipe over his leather socks. They said, "Do you wipe over your leather socks?" He said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him" - and he said another time - "wipe over his leather socks." This hadith used to please the companions of Abdullah [ibn Mas'ud], who would say, "His conversion to Islam was only after the revelation of Surat al-Ma'ida."
