Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara' say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to carry earth with us on the day of the Confederates, and the dust indeed covered the whiteness of his belly, and he was saying, "O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided, nor given charity, nor prayed. So send down tranquility upon us. Indeed the aggressors have transgressed against us"—and sometimes he said, "Indeed the assembly has transgressed against us"—"if they desire to cause discord, we refuse"—raising his voice with it. Mu'awiyah told us: Abu Ishaq told us—and from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara' ibn Azib, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of the Trench, carrying earth, and he mentioned something similar. Affan told us: Shu'bah told us: Abu Ishaq told us, from al-Bara', who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on the day of the Trench, carrying earth, and he mentioned something similar.
