حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ وَابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ قَالَ فَجَعَلَا يُقْرِئَانِ النَّاسَ الْقُرْآنَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عَمَّارٌ وَبِلَالٌ وَسَعْدٌ قَالَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فِي عِشْرِينَ ثُمَّ جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَمَا رَأَيْتُ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ فَرِحُوا بِشَيْءٍ قَطُّ فَرَحَهُمْ بِهِ حَتَّى رَأَيْتُ الْوَلَائِدَ وَالصِّبْيَانَ يَقُولُونَ هَذَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ جَاءَ قَالَ فَمَا قَدِمَ حَتَّى قَرَأْتُ سَبِّحْ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى فِي سُوَرٍ مِنْ الْمُفَصَّلِ.

Affan told us: Shu'bah told us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard al-Bara' ibn Azib say: The first of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to arrive among us was Mus'ab ibn Umayr and Ibn Umm Maktum. He said: The two of them began teaching people the Qur'an. Then Ammar, Bilal, and Sa'd came. Then Umar ibn al-Khattab came with twenty [others]. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came, and I never saw the people of Medina rejoice at anything as they rejoiced at that, until I saw the slave-girls and the children saying, "This is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has come!" He said: He had not yet arrived when I had already recited "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High" among the short chapters (mufassal).
