حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ وَابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُحِلِّ بْنِ خَلِيفَةَ قَالَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَدِيَّ بْنَ حَاتِمٍ يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اتَّقُوا النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشِقِّ تَمْرَةٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَجِدُوا فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ وَقَالَ ابْنُ جَعْفَرٍ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ.

Abd al-Rahman and Ibn Ja'far told us, they said: Shu'bah told us, from Muhill ibn Khalifah — Abd al-Rahman said: I heard Adi ibn Hatim say: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Guard yourselves against the Fire, even with half a date; and if you do not find that, then with a good word." And Ibn Ja'far said: "then with a word."
