Yazid ibn Harun told us, Hammad ibn Salamah told us, from al-Zubayr Abu Abd al-Salam, from Ayyub ibn Abdullah ibn Mikraz, from Wabisah ibn Ma'bad, who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, intending not to leave anything of righteousness and sin without asking him about it. There was a gathering around him, so I went trying to make my way through the people, and they said, "Away with you, O Wabisah, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; away with you, O Wabisah." I said, "I am Wabisah; let me draw near to him, for he is dearer to me than anyone that I should draw near to him." He said to me, "Come near, O Wabisah; come near, O Wabisah." So I drew near to him until my knee touched his knee. He said, "O Wabisah, shall I tell you what you have come to ask me, or will you ask?" I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me." He said, "You have come to ask me about righteousness and sin." I said, "Yes." He gathered his three fingers and began tapping them on my chest, saying, "O Wabisah, ask your own heart. Righteousness is that which the heart and the soul find rest in, and sin is that which wavers in the heart and turns back and forth in the breast, even if people give you a ruling." Sufyan said: "and give you their rulings."
