Abd al-Samad and Affan narrated to us — the meaning being the same — both saying: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us: Ali ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Hasan, that Ibn Amir appointed Kilab ibn Umayyah over Aylah, while Uthman ibn Abi al-'As was on his own land, so Uthman came to him and said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him' — Abd al-Samad said in his narration: 'say: "There is an hour in the night in which the gates of heaven are opened, and a caller calls out: Is there anyone who asks, that I may give him? Is there anyone who calls upon Me, that I may answer him? Is there anyone who seeks forgiveness, that I may forgive him?"' Both of them said together: 'And Dawud went out one night and said: "No one asks Allah, Mighty and Sublime, for anything but He gives it to him, unless he be a sorcerer or a tax-collector."' So Kilab called for a small boat, and boarded it, and sailed down to Ibn Amir, and said: 'Take back your position.' He said: 'Why?' He said: 'Uthman told us such-and-such.'
