Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, who said: Amr ibn al-'As sought permission to visit Fatimah, and she permitted him. He said: 'Is Ali there?' They said: 'No.' He said: so he went back. Then he sought permission to visit her again another time, and asked: 'Is Ali there?' They said: 'Yes.' So he entered upon her. Ali said to him: 'What kept you from entering when you did not find me here?' He said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade us from entering upon women whose husbands are absent.'
