'Abd al-Samad b. 'Abd al-Warith told us, he said: Malik b. Mighwal told us, he said: 'Ali b. Mudrik told us, from Abu 'Amir al-Ash'ari: there was a man of theirs killed at Awtas, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu 'Amir, did you not change it?" And he recited this verse: {O you who believe, take care of your own selves; he who errs cannot harm you if you are rightly guided.} So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "Where have you gone?! It is rather: 'O you who believe...he who errs cannot harm you' — meaning of the disbelievers — 'if you are rightly guided.'"
