Al-Hasan ibn Sawwar told us: Layth — namely ibn Sa'd — told us, from Mu'awiyah, from Rashid ibn Sa'd, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Qatadah al-Sulami, who said: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say: 'Indeed God, Mighty and Majestic, created Adam, then took his progeny from his back and said, These are for Paradise and I do not care, and these are for the Fire and I do not care.' He said: Then someone said, 'O Messenger of God, upon what basis do we act then?' He said, 'According to the outcomes decreed by predestination.'
