حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ وَسَعْدٌ قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ صَالِحٍ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ اجْتَمَعَ رَبِيعَةُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ فَقَالَا وَاللَّهِ لَوْ بَعَثْنَا هَذَيْنِ الْغُلَامَيْنِ فَقَالَ لِي وَلِلْفَضْلِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَمَّرَهُمَا عَلَى هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَاتِ فَأَدَّيَا مَا يُؤَدِّي النَّاسُ وَأَصَابَا مَا يُصِيبُ النَّاسُ مِنْ الْمَنْفَعَةِ فَبَيْنَمَا هُمَا فِي ذَلِكَ جَاءَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَبِي طَالِبٍ فَقَالَ مَاذَا تُرِيدَانِ فَأَخْبَرَاهُ بِالَّذِي أَرَادَا قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلَا فَوَاللَّهِ مَا هُوَ بِفَاعِلٍ فَقَالَ لِمَ تَصْنَعُ هَذَا فَمَا هَذَا مِنْكَ إِلَّا نَفَاسَةٌ عَلَيْنَا لَقَدْ صَحِبْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنِلْتَ صِهْرَهُ فَمَا نَفِسْنَا ذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَنَا أَبُو حَسَنٍ أَرْسِلُوهُمَا ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ سَبَقْنَاهُ إِلَى الْحُجْرَةِ فَقُمْنَا عِنْدَهَا حَتَّى مَرَّ بِنَا فَأَخَذَ بِأَيْدِينَا ثُمَّ قَالَ أَخْرِجَا مَا تُصَرِّرَانِ وَدَخَلَ فَدَخَلْنَا مَعَهُ وَهُوَ حِينَئِذٍ فِي بَيْتِ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ قَالَ فَكَلَّمْنَاهُ فَقُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ جِئْنَاكَ لِتُؤَمِّرَنَا عَلَى هَذِهِ الصَّدَقَاتِ فَنُصِيبَ مَا يُصِيبُ النَّاسُ مِنْ الْمَنْفَعَةِ وَنُؤَدِّي إِلَيْكَ مَا يُؤَدِّي النَّاسُ قَالَ فَسَكَتَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى سَقْفِ الْبَيْتِ حَتَّى أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نُكَلِّمَهُ قَالَ فَأَشَارَتْ إِلَيْنَا زَيْنَبُ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابِهَا كَأَنَّهَا تَنْهَانَا عَنْ كَلَامِهِ وَأَقْبَلَ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنَّ الصَّدَقَةَ لَا تَنْبَغِي لِمُحَمَّدٍ وَلَا لِآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّمَا هِيَ أَوْسَاخُ النَّاسِ ادْعُوا لِي مَحْمِيَةَ بْنَ جَزْءٍ وَكَانَ عَلَى الْعُشْرِ وَأَبَا سُفْيَانَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ فَأَتَيَا فَقَالَ لِمَحْمِيَةَ أَصْدِقْ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ الْخُمُسِ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الزُّهْرِيُّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلِ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ قَالَ اجْتَمَعَ الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ وَابْنُ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ.

Ya'qub and Sa'd narrated to us, they said: our father narrated to us, from Salih, from al-Zuhri, from Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib, who informed him that Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib informed him that Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith and al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib met, and they said: By Allah, if we sent these two young men - meaning me and al-Fadl ibn Abbas - to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he appointed us over these charities, we would render what the people render and gain the benefit that the people gain. While they were engaged in that, Ali ibn Abi Talib came and said: What do you two want? They told him what they wanted. He said: Do not do it, for by Allah he will not do it. It was said to him: Why do you do this? This is nothing but jealousy toward us; you have accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and gained kinship with him by marriage, yet we have not envied you for that. He said: I am Abu Hasan; send them off. Then he lay down. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had prayed the noon prayer, we went ahead of him to the chamber and stood by it until he passed by us. He took us by the hand and said: Bring out what you are concealing, and he went in, and we went in with him. He was at that time in the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh. We spoke to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have come to you so that you appoint us over these charities, so that we may gain the benefit that the people gain and render to you what the people render. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fell silent and raised his head to the ceiling of the house until we thought of speaking to him again. Then Zaynab gestured to us from behind her veil as though forbidding us to speak to him. Then he turned to us and said: Charity is not proper for Muhammad nor for the family of Muhammad; it is only the impurities of the people. Call for me Mahmiyyah ibn Jaz' - who was in charge of the tithe (the tenth) - and Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith. They came, and he said to Mahmiyyah: Give them a dower for the two of them from the fifth (khumus). Ya'qub narrated to us, our father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: al-Zuhri narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, from Abd al-Muttalib ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, who said: al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib and Ibn Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith met in the mosque - and he mentioned the hadith.
