Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: Ibn Jabir narrated to us, from al-Qasim Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, from 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir, who said: While I was leading the mount of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, through one of those mountain passes, he said to me, "O 'Uqbah, will you not ride?" I held the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in too much esteem to ride his mount. Then he said, "O little 'Uqbah, will you not ride?" I feared it might be disobedience [to refuse], so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted and I rode for a little while, then he mounted again. Then he said, "O little 'Uqbah, shall I not teach you two surahs, among the best two surahs people have ever recited?" I said, "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah." So he taught me "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind." Then the prayer was called, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped forward and recited them both. Then he passed by me and said, "How did you find that, O little 'Uqbah? Recite them every time you sleep and every time you rise." Abu 'Abd al-Rahman said: He is 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir ibn 'Abis, and Ibn 'Abs said "al-Juhani."
