Haytham ibn Kharija narrated to us: Isma'il ibn Ayyash narrated to us, from Rashid ibn Dawud al-San'ani, from Abu al-Ash'ath al-San'ani, that he went one day to the mosque of Damascus, going early, and he met Shaddad ibn Aws with al-Sunabihi accompanying him. I said: Where are you two going, may Allah have mercy on you both? They said: We intend to go here to a brother of ours who is ill, to visit him. So I went along with them until they entered upon that man and said to him: How did you wake up this morning? He said: I woke up in a state of blessing. Shaddad said to him: Rejoice at the expiation of sins and the removal of wrongdoings, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: When I afflict a believing servant among My servants and he praises Me for what I have afflicted him with, he rises from that bed of his like the day his mother bore him, free of sins. And the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, says: I have bound My servant and afflicted him; so record for him as you used to record for him when he was well.
