Hashim narrated to us: Shu'ba narrated to us from 'Amr ibn Murra, who said: I heard Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab say: Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan came to Medina - and it was the last visit he made there - and he brought out a hank of hair, and said: 'I did not think anyone would do this except the Jews, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called it falsehood.' He said, as though he meant al-wisal (continuous fasting without breaking it).
