Abu al-Nadr told us: al-Hakam ibn Fudayl told us, from Khalid al-Hadhdha', from Abu Tamimah, from a man of his people: that he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him - or he said: I witnessed the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a man came to him and said, "Are you the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him" - or he said, "Are you Muhammad?" He said, "Yes." The man said, "Then what do you call to?" He said, "I call to Allah, Mighty and Sublime, alone - the One who, if harm befalls you and you call upon Him, removes it from you; and the One who, if a year of drought strikes you and you call upon Him, causes crops to grow for you; and the One who, if you are in a barren land and lose your way and you call upon Him, brings you back." He said: So the man accepted Islam, then said, "Advise me, O Messenger of Allah." He said to him, "Do not curse anything" - or he said, "anyone," al-Hakam being uncertain which. The man said: "I have not cursed a camel or a sheep since the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave me that advice. And do not disdain doing good, even if it only be meeting your brother with a cheerful face while speaking to him; and empty your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water; and wear your lower garment down to mid-shin, and if you refuse that, then to the ankles; and beware of letting your garment trail down, for that is a form of vanity, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, does not love vanity."
