He said: Abu al-Nadr Hashim ibn al-Qasim told us: al-Mubarak, that is Ibn Fadalah, told us: Abu Imran al-Jawni told us, from Rabi'ah al-Aslami, who said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: O Rabi'ah, will you not marry? I said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have no desire to marry; I have nothing to support a wife with, and I do not wish for anything to distract me from you. So he turned away from me, and I continued serving him as long as I served him. Then he said to me a second time: O Rabi'ah, will you not marry? I said: I have no desire to marry; I have nothing to support a wife with, and I do not wish for anything to distract me from you. So he turned away from me. Then I reflected within myself and said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, knows better than I what will benefit me in this world and the next. By Allah, if he says marry, I will surely say yes, O Messenger of Allah, command me as you wish. He said: O Rabi'ah, will you not marry? I said: Yes indeed, command me as you wish. He said: Go to the family of so-and-so, a clan of the Ansar -- and there was some estrangement between them and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him -- and tell them: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has sent me to you, commanding you to marry me to so-and-so, a woman from among them. So I went and said to them: The Messenger of Allah has sent me to you, commanding you to marry me to so-and-so. They said: Welcome to the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and welcome to the Messenger of Allah himself. By Allah, the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, shall not return except with what he came for. So they married me and treated me kindly, and they did not ask me for any proof. I returned to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, feeling grieved. He said to me: What is the matter with you, O Rabi'ah? I said: O Messenger of Allah, I went to noble people; they married me and honored me and treated me kindly, and they did not ask me for any proof, but I have no bridal gift. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Burayd al-Aslami, gather for him the weight of a date-stone in gold. So they gathered for me the weight of a date-stone in gold. I took what they had gathered for me and brought it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: Take this to them and say: This is her bridal gift. So I went to them and said: This is her bridal gift. They accepted it and were satisfied with it, and said: A generous and goodly amount. Then I returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, feeling grieved. He said: O Rabi'ah, what grieves you? I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have never seen a people more generous than them; they were content with what I brought them and treated me well and said good things, but I have nothing with which to hold a wedding feast. He said: O Burayd, gather for him a sheep. So they gathered for me a huge, fat ram. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me: Go to Aisha and tell her to send the basket that has the food in it. So I went to her and told her what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had commanded me. She said: Here is the basket; in it are nine sa' of barley. No, by Allah, we shall have no other food until morning -- take it. I took it and brought it to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him what Aisha had said. He said: Take this to them and tell them: let this become bread for you by morning. So I went to them and took the ram with me, along with some people from Aslam. He had said: Let this become bread for you, and this a cooked dish. They said: As for the bread, we will take care of that ourselves; but as for the ram, you take care of it yourselves. So I and some people from Aslam took the ram, slaughtered it, skinned it, and cooked it, and by morning we had bread and meat. So I held the wedding feast and invited the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave me a piece of land, and Abu Bakr gave me a piece of land, and then worldly matters came between us, and we disputed over a cluster of a palm tree. I said: It is within my boundary, and Abu Bakr said: It is within my boundary. Words passed between me and Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr said something he disliked and regretted, and he said to me: O Rabi'ah, return the like of it to me so that it may be retaliation. I said: I will not do that. Abu Bakr said: You will surely say it, or I shall complain of you to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I said: I will not do that. He said: So Rabi'ah gave up the land, and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, went off to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and I followed after him. Then some people from Aslam came and said to me: May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr -- over what does he complain of you to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he is the one who said to you what he said? I said: Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq; this is the second of the two; this is the one with the grey hair of the Muslims. Beware lest he turn and see you supporting me against him, and become angry, and go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he becomes angry for his anger, and then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, becomes angry for their anger, and Rabi'ah is destroyed. They said: What do you command us? I said: Go back. He said: So Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, went on to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I followed him alone until he came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and told him the story as it had happened. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raised his head to me and said: O Rabi'ah, what is between you and al-Siddiq? I said: O Messenger of Allah, such and such happened; he said to me a word he disliked. He said to me: Say as I said, so that it may be retaliation, but I refused. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Indeed -- so do not return it upon him, but say: May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr. So I said: May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr. Al-Hasan said: Then Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, turned away weeping.
