He said: 'Abd al-A'la ibn 'Abd al-A'la narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Mahmud ibn al-Rabi', from 'Itban ibn Malik, that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, the floods come between me and the mosque of my people, so I would like you to come to me and pray in a place in my house that I will take as a place of prayer." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "We shall do so." He said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, awoke, he went in the morning to Abu Bakr and took him along. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered, he said: "Where do you want?" So I pointed him to a corner of the house. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, [went there], and we lined up behind him, and he led us in two rak'ahs, and we detained him for some porridge we had prepared. The people of the house - meaning the people of the village - heard of it and began coming until the house was full. A man among the people said: "Where is Malik ibn al-Dukhshum?" A man said: "That one is among the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not say that; he says 'there is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah." He said: "But we see his face and his talk directed to the hypocrites." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, [again] said: "Do not say that; he says 'there is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah." A man among the people said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever comes on the Day of Resurrection saying 'there is no god but Allah,' seeking thereby the face of Allah, will surely be forbidden to the Fire." Mahmud said: I related that to some people, among whom was Abu Ayyub, who said: "I do not think the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said this." I said: "If I return and 'Itban is alive, I will certainly ask him." So I came, and he was blind and was the imam of his people, and I asked him, and he related it to me just as he had related it to me the first time; and 'Itban had been present at Badr. He said: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, who said: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Mahmud ibn al-Rabi', from 'Itban ibn Malik, who said: I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "I have lost my sight," and he mentioned its meaning, except that he said "Malik ibn al-Dukhshun," and sometimes said "al-Dukhayshin," and said "forbidden to the Fire" and did not say "he had been present at Badr."
