Waki' narrated to us from Amr ibn Hassan - meaning al-Musli: al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah al-Yashkuri narrated to us from his father, who said: I entered the mosque of Kufah when it was first built, when it was among the palm-fiber [huts] in those days, and its walls were of clay. There was a man addressing the people, saying: The Farewell Pilgrimage of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, reached me, so I took a mount from among my camels, then went out and sat waiting for him on the road to Arafah - or I stood waiting for him on the road to Arafah. Then there was a group of riders, and I recognized the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, among them by his description. A man ahead of him said: Clear the way for the riding camels! The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Woe to him, what is his urgent need? So I drew close to him until the heads of the two she-camels intersected. I said: O Messenger of God, direct me to a deed that will admit me to Paradise and save me from the Fire. He said: Well said, well said! If you were brief in your speech, you have certainly been thorough in your question. Understand then: you worship God, Mighty and Sublime, associating nothing with Him, you establish prayer, pay zakat, perform Hajj to the House, and fast Ramadan. [Now] clear the way for the riding camels. Waki' narrated to us from Yunus, he said: I heard this hadith from al-Mughirah ibn Abdullah, from his father, similarly. Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, from al-Mughirah, from his father, who said: I came upon a man addressing a group of people, and I sat down, and he said: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, was described to me while I was at Mina, heading in the morning to Arafat - and he mentioned the hadith - I said: O Messenger of God, tell me of a deed that will bring me near to Paradise and take me far from the Fire. He said: You establish prayer, give zakat, perform Hajj to the House, fast Ramadan, and love for people what you love to be given to yourself, and dislike for them what you dislike to be given to yourself. [Now] clear the way for the riding camels.
