Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us: Abu Awanah narrated to us from Asim ibn Kulayb: Suhayl ibn Dhira' narrated to me, that he heard Ma'n ibn Yazid, or Abu Ma'n, say: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Gather in your mosques, and when a group has gathered, let them inform me. We gathered, among the first of the people, and came to him, and he came walking with us until he sat down among us. Then a speaker among us spoke and said: Praise be to God, beyond whom praise has no limit, and behind whom there is no passage - and something similar to this. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, became angry and got up. We blamed each other and each of us blamed the other, saying: God singled us out by having him come to us before all the people, yet such-and-such happened. So we went to him and found him in the mosque of Banu so-and-so, and we spoke to him, and he came walking with us until he sat in the place where he had been sitting, or nearby, then said: Indeed all praise belongs to God; what God wills, He places before it, and what He wills, He places behind it; and indeed there is a kind of eloquence that is like magic. Then he turned to us and commanded us, spoke to us, and taught us.
