Ali ibn Ishaq told us: Abdullah - meaning Ibn al-Mubarak - informed us: al-Awza'i informed us: al-Muttalib ibn Hantab al-Makhzumi told me: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Amrah al-Ansari told me: My father told me: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, on a military expedition, and the people were struck by severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for permission to slaughter some of their riding animals, saying: "Allah will sustain us through it." When Umar ibn al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had resolved to permit them to slaughter some of their riding animals, he said: "O Messenger of Allah, how will it be for us if we meet the enemy tomorrow hungry and on foot? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call for the remainder of their provisions, gather them together, then pray to Allah for blessing in them, for Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will surely sustain us through your prayer" - or he said "will bless us through your prayer." So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, called for the remainder of their provisions. The people began bringing handfuls of food and more, and the most any of them brought was a sa' of dates. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered it, then stood and prayed as long as Allah willed, then called the army with their vessels and ordered them to scoop it up. Not a single vessel remained in the army but they filled it, and the like of it remained over. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, laughed until his molars showed, and said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah - no believing servant meets Allah with these two testimonies but the Fire is veiled from him on the Day of Resurrection."
