Abu al-Mughirah told us, Safwan told us: Shurayh ibn Ubayd al-Hadrami and others told me, they said: Iyad ibn Ghanam flogged the lord of Dariya when it was conquered, and Hisham ibn Hakim spoke harshly to him about it until Iyad became angry. Then he remained [angry] for some nights, and Hisham ibn Hakim came to him and apologized to him. Then Hisham said to Iyad, "Did you not hear the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Among the people most severely punished [on the Day of Judgment] are those who most severely punish people in this world?" Iyad ibn Ghanam said, "O Hisham ibn Hakim, we have heard what you heard and seen what you saw. Did you not also hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Whoever wishes to advise a ruler concerning a matter, let him not do so openly, but let him take him by the hand and be alone with him; if he accepts it [that is well], and if not, he has discharged what was due from him. And you, O Hisham, are indeed rash, daring against the authority of Allah. Did you not fear that the ruler might kill you, so that you would become one slain by the authority of Allah, Blessed and Exalted?"
