'Ali ibn 'Asim narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas, and he mentioned a man, from al-Hasan, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, consulted the people about the captives on the Day of Badr, and said, "Allah, Mighty and Sublime, has given you power over them." 'Umar ibn al-Khattab stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from him. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, returned and said, "O people, Allah has given you power over them, and they were your brothers just yesterday." 'Umar stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, strike their necks," and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from him. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, returned and said the same to the people. Abu Bakr stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to pardon them and accept ransom from them." He said: The distress that had been on the face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then went away, and he pardoned them and accepted ransom from them. He said: Then Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "Had it not been for a prior decree from Allah, you would have been afflicted for what you took"—to the end of the verse.
