Hashim told us, al-Mubarak told us, from al-Hasan, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered the Friday sermon, he used to lean his back against a piece of wood. When the people increased in number, he said, "Build me a pulpit," wanting them to be able to hear him. So they built him one with two steps, and he moved from the wood to the pulpit. He said: Anas ibn Malik informed me that he heard the wood moan like the moaning of a parent. He said: It kept moaning until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came down from the pulpit and walked to it and embraced it, and it grew still.
