'Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ma'mar told us, from Qatadah, from Anas, who said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me — and that was before dawn — 'O Anas, I intend to fast, so feed me something.'" He said: I brought him dates and a vessel of water, after Bilal had given the call to prayer. He said, "O Anas, find someone to eat with me." So I called Zayd ibn Thabit, who said, "O Messenger of Allah, I have already drunk a draught of barley gruel, and I intend to fast." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "And I too intend to fast." So he ate the pre-dawn meal with him, prayed two rak'ahs, then went out, and the prayer was called.
