Abd al-Samad ibn Abd al-Warith told us, my father told us, Nafi Abu Ghalib al-Bahili told us, who attended upon Anas ibn Malik, and said: al-Ala ibn Ziyad al-Adawi said, "O Abu Hamzah, how old was the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he was sent as a prophet?" He said, "Forty years old." He said, "Then what was it after that?" He said, "He remained in Mecca ten years and in Medina ten years, so he completed sixty years, then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, took him to Himself." He said, "What was his age like on that day?" He said, "Like the strongest, most handsome, most beautiful, and most well-built of men." He said, "O Abu Hamzah, did you fight alongside the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He said, "Yes, I fought with him on the day of Hunayn. The polytheists came out in great numbers and charged upon us until we saw our horses turned behind our backs. Among the polytheists was a man charging upon us, striking us down and crushing us. When the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw that, he dismounted, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, defeated them, and they fled. The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood when he saw the victory, and the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had them brought to him as captives, one man at a time, and they gave him their pledge of allegiance upon Islam. A man among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, 'I have a vow upon me: if the man who has been crushing us since today is brought, I shall strike off his neck.' He said: The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, kept silent, and the man was brought. When he saw the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he said, 'O Prophet of Allah, I repent to Allah; O Prophet of Allah, I repent to Allah.' So the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, held back and did not take his pledge, so that the other man might fulfill his vow. He said: So that man kept looking at the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, waiting for him to order his killing, yet he was in awe of the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and dared not kill him without an order. When he saw that the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was doing nothing, he came to him and said, 'O Prophet of Allah, my vow!' He said, 'I only held back from him today so that you could fulfill your vow.' He said, 'O Prophet of Allah, why did you not give me a signal?' He said, 'It is not for a prophet to make a covert signal.'"
