Husayn told us, Ibn Ayyash - meaning Isma'il - told us, from al-Hajjaj ibn Marwan al-Kala'i and Aqil ibn Mudrik al-Sulami, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that a man came to him and said: "Advise me." He said: "You have asked what you asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, before you. I advise you to fear Allah, for that is the head of everything. And hold fast to jihad, for it is the monasticism of Islam. And hold fast to the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of the Qur'an, for it is your spirit in heaven and your remembrance on earth." Abu Nu'aym told us, Fitr told us, Isma'il ibn Raja' told me, who said: I heard my father say: I heard Abu Sa'id al-Khudri say: "We were sitting waiting for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him," and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said: "So I came to give him the good news." He said: "But he did not raise his head at it, as though he had already heard it."
