Ya'qub narrated to us: my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, he said: 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah narrated to me, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave those gifts he gave among the Quraysh and the tribes of the Arabs, and none of it went to the Ansar, this clan of the Ansar found something in their hearts about it, until talk of it spread among them, so much that one of their speakers said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, has returned to his own people." Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah came in to him and said, "O Messenger of Allah, this clan has found something in their hearts because of what you have done with this booty you obtained — you divided it among your own people and gave great gifts among the tribes of the Arabs, while none of it went to this clan of the Ansar." He said, "Where do you stand regarding that, O Sa'd?" He said, "O Messenger of Allah, I am only a man of my own people, and what am I to say?" He said, "Then gather your people for me in this enclosure." So Sa'd went out and gathered the people in that enclosure. Then some men of the Muhajirun came, and he let them in, and others came, and he turned them away. When they had all gathered, Sa'd came to him and said, "This clan of the Ansar has gathered for you." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to them and praised Allah and extolled Him as He deserves, then said: "O assembly of the Ansar, what is this talk that has reached me from you, this grievance you have found in yourselves? Did I not come to you when you were astray, and Allah guided you through me; and poor, and Allah enriched you through me; and enemies to one another, and Allah united your hearts through me?" They said, "Rather, Allah and His Messenger are more gracious and more excellent." He said, "Will you not answer me, O assembly of the Ansar?" They said, "And with what shall we answer you, O Messenger of Allah, when to Allah and His Messenger belong the grace and the excellence?" He said, "By Allah, had you wished, you could have said, and you would have spoken the truth and been believed: 'You came to us rejected, and we believed you; abandoned, and we helped you; a fugitive, and we sheltered you; and poor, and we enriched you.' Did you find in yourselves, O assembly of the Ansar, resentment over a trifle of this world by which I conciliated a people so that they might accept Islam, while I entrusted you to your own faith? Are you not content, O assembly of the Ansar, that people go away with sheep and camels, while you go back with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to your homes? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, were it not for the emigration, I would have been a man of the Ansar; and if the people were to take one path and the Ansar another, I would take the path of the Ansar. O Allah, have mercy on the Ansar, and the children of the Ansar, and the children of the children of the Ansar." He said: The people wept until their beards were wet, and they said, "We are content with the Messenger of Allah as our share and portion." Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, departed, and we dispersed.
