Abdullah ibn Amr said: While we were sitting with the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the shade of a tree between Makkah and Madinah, a Bedouin came — one of the most rough and severe of people — and said: 'As-salamu alaykum.' They replied: 'Wa alaykum [as-salam].'
