Tamim ibn Hudhlam said: I remember the first person who was greeted with the title of Commander in Kufa. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah came out from the gate of al-Rahbah, and a man from Kindah — they claimed he was Abu Qurrah al-Kindi — suddenly met him and greeted him, saying: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander, and the mercy of Allah. Peace be upon you all.' [Al-Mughirah] was displeased by it, and said: 'Peace be upon you, O Commander, and the mercy of Allah. Peace be upon you all. Am I not one of them, or not?' Sammak said: 'Then he later accepted it.'
