Ibn Shihab reported: Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz asked Abu Bakr ibn Sulayman ibn Abi Hathmah: 'Why did Abu Bakr write: "From Abu Bakr, the successor of the Messenger of Allah," and then Umar wrote after him: "From Umar ibn al-Khattab, the successor of Abu Bakr"? Who was the first to write "Commander of the Faithful"?' He said: 'My grandmother al-Shifa' — who was one of the early emigrants, and Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) would visit her when he entered the market — told me: Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to the governor of Iraq: "Send me two strong, noble men so I can ask them about Iraq and its people." So the governor sent Labid ibn Rabi'ah and Adi ibn Hatim. They arrived in Madinah, made their camels kneel in the courtyard of the mosque, entered, and found Amr ibn al-As. They said: "O Amr! Seek permission for us to see the Commander of the Faithful, Umar." Amr jumped up and went to Umar and said: "Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful!" Umar said: "What put this name in your mind, O Ibn al-As? You had better explain what you said." He said: "Yes. Labid ibn Rabi'ah and Adi ibn Hatim have arrived and said to me: Seek permission for us to see the Commander of the Faithful. I said: By Allah, you have found the right name; he is indeed the Commander, and we are the Believers." From that day on, letters were written with that title.'
