Hadrat Ibn Abi Layla narrates: 'The prayer was changed three times.' He said: 'Our companions told us that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "I desired that the prayer of the Muslims — or he said: the believers — should be unified. I even thought of sending men through the neighborhoods to call people at prayer time, and I thought of stationing men on elevated places to call the Muslims to prayer — until they struck, or were about to strike, a bell." Then a man from the Ansar came and submitted: "O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)! When I returned — seeing your concern — I saw (in a dream) a man wearing two green garments standing on the mosque and calling the Adhan. Then he sat briefly, then stood again and said the same, except he added: 'Qad qamat al-Salah' (Prayer has commenced). Were it not that people would say" — Ibn al-Muthanna said: that you would say — "I would have said I was awake, not sleeping." The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) — as Ibn al-Muthanna narrated — stated: "Allah has shown you something good. Command Hadrat Bilal to call the Adhan." Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: "I too saw the same as he saw, but when he preceded me, I felt shy." He said: Our companions told us that when a man came (late), he would ask and be informed of what he had missed of the prayer. People would join the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in various states — some standing, some in bowing, some sitting, some praying along with him (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) — until Hadrat Mu'adh came... Shu'bah says: I heard this from Husayn — Hadrat Mu'adh said: "I would never find him (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in any state without joining him in it (completing what I missed afterwards)." He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Hadrat Mu'adh has established a practice (sunnah) for you; do likewise." Our companions also told us that when the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, he commanded them to fast for three days, then Ramadan was revealed... حضرت ابنِ ابی لیلیٰ فرماتے ہیں: نماز تین مرتبہ تبدیل ہوئی۔ فرماتے ہیں: ہمارے ساتھیوں نے ہمیں بتایا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: مجھے پسند آیا کہ مسلمانوں — یا فرمایا: مؤمنوں — کی نماز ایک ہو (یعنی سب مل کر پڑھیں)۔ حتیٰ کہ میں نے ارادہ کیا کہ محلوں میں آدمی بھیجوں جو لوگوں کو نماز کے وقت پکاریں، اور میں نے ارادہ کیا کہ لوگوں کو اونچی جگہوں پر کھڑا کروں جو مسلمانوں کو نماز کا وقت بتائیں — حتیٰ کہ انہوں نے ناقوس بجایا یا بجانے کے قریب ہو گئے۔ پھر انصار میں سے ایک شخص آئے اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! جب میں واپس ہوا — آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی فکر دیکھ کر — تو میں نے (خواب میں) ایک شخص دیکھا جس پر دو سبز کپڑے تھے۔ وہ مسجد پر کھڑا ہوا اور اس نے اذان دی، پھر تھوڑا بیٹھا، پھر کھڑا ہوا اور اسی طرح کہا، مگر اس نے اضافہ کیا: «قَدْ قَامَتِ الصَّلَاةُ» (نماز کھڑی ہو گئی)۔ اور اگر لوگ یہ نہ کہیں — ابنِ مثنیٰ نے کہا: تم یہ نہ کہو — تو میں کہتا کہ میں بیدار تھا سوئا نہیں تھا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے — ابنِ مثنیٰ نے کہا — ارشاد فرمایا: اللہ نے تمہیں خیر دکھائی۔ عمرو (نے یہ نہیں کہا: اللہ نے تمہیں خیر دکھائی) سو حضرت بلال کو حکم دو وہ اذان دے۔ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: مجھے بھی وہی نظر آیا جو اسے نظر آیا، مگر جب مجھ سے سبقت ہو گئی تو مجھے حیا آئی۔ فرماتے ہیں: ہمارے ساتھیوں نے ہمیں بتایا کہ جب کوئی شخص آتا تو پوچھتا اور اسے بتایا جاتا کہ نماز کا کتنا حصہ فوت ہوا۔ اور یہ کہ لوگ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ مختلف حالتوں میں شامل ہوتے: کوئی کھڑا ہوتا، کوئی رکوع میں، کوئی بیٹھا ہوتا، کوئی آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ نماز پڑھ رہا ہوتا — حتیٰ کہ حضرت معاذ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ آئے... شعبہ فرماتے ہیں: میں نے یہ حصین سے سنا ہے — تو حضرت معاذ نے فرمایا: میں آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو جس حالت میں نہیں پاتا وہ نہیں ہوتی (یعنی جو رہ جائے وہ بعد میں پوری کرتا)۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: حضرت معاذ نے تمہارے لیے ایک سنت (طریقہ) قائم کیا، ایسا ہی کرو۔ اور ہمارے ساتھیوں نے بتایا کہ جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم مدینہ تشریف لائے تو تین دن کے روزوں کا حکم دیا، پھر رمضان نازل ہوا...
