Hadrat Humayd bin Nafi' said that Hadrat Zaynab bint Abi Salamah (may Allah be well pleased with them both) related three traditions to him. Hadrat Zaynab (may Allah be well pleased with her) said: 'I visited Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Umm Habibah (may Allah be well pleased with her) when her father, Hadrat Abu Sufyan (may Allah be well pleased with him), passed away. She called for yellow perfume — khaluq (saffron-based) or something else — applied it to a young girl, then rubbed some on her own cheeks. Then she said: "By Allah, I have no need for perfume, but I heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: 'It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased beyond three nights, except for a husband — four months and ten days.'" Hadrat Zaynab (may Allah be well pleased with her) also said: 'I visited Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be well pleased with her) when her brother passed away. She too called for perfume and applied it, then said: "By Allah, I have no need for perfume, but I heard the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say on the pulpit: 'It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any deceased beyond three nights, except for a husband — four months and ten days.'" Hadrat Zaynab (may Allah be well pleased with her) also said: 'I heard my mother, Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be well pleased with her), say: "A woman came to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and submitted: 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), my daughter's husband has died and her eyes are ailing — may we apply kohl to her eyes?' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'No.' He was asked two or three times, and each time he stated: 'No.' Then he stated: 'It is only four months and ten days (in which she must observe patience). In the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance), one of you used to throw a piece of dung at the end of a year.'" Humayd said: 'I asked Hadrat Zaynab (may Allah be well pleased with her): "What does 'throwing a piece of dung at the end of a year' mean?" She replied: "In the days of Jahiliyyah, when a woman's husband died, she would enter a tiny hut (hifsh), wear her worst clothes, and not touch any perfume or adornment until a year had passed. Then an animal would be brought — a donkey, sheep, or bird — and she would rub herself against it. Rarely would the animal she rubbed against survive. Then she would come out, be given a piece of dung which she would throw away, and after that she would use perfume or whatever she wished."' Abu Dawud (upon him be mercy) said: 'Hifsh means a small hut.'
اردو ترجمہ
حمید بن نافع فرماتے ہیں کہ حضرت زینب بنت ابی سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے انہیں یہ تین حدیثیں بیان کیں۔ حضرت زینب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا فرماتی ہیں: میں حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین ام حبیبہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس گئی جب ان کے والد حضرت ابوسفیان رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کا انتقال ہوا۔ انہوں نے زرد رنگ کی خوشبو — خلوق یا کوئی اور — منگوائی، ایک لڑکی کو لگائی، پھر اپنے دونوں رخساروں پر بھی مل لی۔ پھر فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! مجھے خوشبو کی کوئی ضرورت نہیں تھی، مگر میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو یہ فرماتے سنا ہے: کسی عورت کے لیے جو اللہ اور یوم آخرت پر ایمان رکھتی ہو یہ حلال نہیں کہ وہ کسی میت پر تین راتوں سے زیادہ سوگ منائے، ہاں شوہر پر چار مہینے دس دن سوگ ہے۔ حضرت زینب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا فرماتی ہیں: پھر میں حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین زینب بنت جحش رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس گئی جب ان کے بھائی کا انتقال ہوا۔ انہوں نے (بھی) خوشبو منگوائی اور لگائی، پھر فرمایا: اللہ کی قسم! مجھے خوشبو لگانے کی کوئی ضرورت نہیں، مگر میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو منبر پر ارشاد فرماتے سنا: کسی عورت کے لیے جو اللہ اور یوم آخرت پر ایمان رکھتی ہو یہ حلال نہیں کہ کسی میت پر تین راتوں سے زیادہ سوگ منائے، ہاں شوہر پر چار مہینے دس دن سوگ ہے۔ حضرت زینب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا فرماتی ہیں: میں نے اپنی والدہ حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین ام سلمہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کو فرماتے سنا: ایک عورت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی بارگاہ میں حاضر ہوئی اور عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میری بیٹی کا شوہر فوت ہو گیا ہے اور اس کی آنکھیں دکھ رہی ہیں، کیا ہم اسے سرمہ لگا دیں؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: نہیں۔ دو یا تین بار پوچھا گیا، ہر بار آپ نے فرمایا: نہیں۔ پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: بس چار مہینے دس دن ہیں (جن میں صبر کرنا لازم ہے)۔ حالانکہ جاہلیت کے زمانے میں تم میں سے کوئی سال گزرنے پر مینگنی پھینکتی تھی۔ حمید کہتے ہیں: میں نے حضرت زینب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا سے پوچھا: سال گزرنے پر مینگنی پھینکنے سے کیا مراد ہے؟ حضرت زینب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا نے فرمایا: جاہلیت میں جب کسی عورت کا شوہر مر جاتا تو وہ ایک تنگ جھونپڑی میں رہتی، بدترین کپڑے پہنتی، نہ خوشبو لگاتی نہ کوئی زینت کرتی یہاں تک کہ ایک سال گزر جاتا۔ پھر کوئی جانور لایا جاتا — گدھا، بکری یا پرندہ — وہ اپنا بدن اس سے رگڑتی، شاید ہی کوئی جانور ہوتا جسے رگڑ کر وہ زندہ بچ جاتا۔ پھر وہ باہر آتی، اسے ایک مینگنی دی جاتی جسے وہ پھینک دیتی، اس کے بعد وہ جو چاہے خوشبو یا اور کچھ استعمال کرتی۔ حضرت ابوداؤد رحمۃ اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ فرماتے ہیں: «حِفْش» کا مطلب ایک تنگ چھوٹا گھر ہے۔
