English Translation
'Abd al-Rahman ibn Azhar al-Zuhri narrated from his father: A drinker was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while he was at Khaybar. He threw dust in his face, then ordered his companions to beat him with their sandals and whatever was in their hands until he said: "Stop." They stopped. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) died and that was his practice. Then Abu Bakr administered forty lashes for drinking wine. Then 'Umar administered forty lashes at the beginning of his rule, then eighty at the end of his caliphate. Then 'Uthman administered forty, then Mu'awiyah administered eighty.
