Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:10132 حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ التَّمَّارُ وَأَبُو خَلِيفَةَ الْفَضْلُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ قَالَا ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ قَالَا ثنا سُفْيَانُ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ عُمَارَةَ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ إِنِّي لَمُسْتَتِرٌ بِأَسْتَارِ الْكَعْبَةِ إِذْ جَاءَ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ؛ ثَقَفِيٌّ وَخَتَنَاهُ قُرَشِيَّانِ كَثِيرٌ شَحْمُ بُطُونِهِمْ قَلِيلٌ فِقْهُهُمْ فَتَحَدَّثُوا الْحَدِيثَ بَيْنَهُمْ فَقَالَ أَحَدُهُمْ تَرَى اللهَ يَسْمَعُ مَا قُلْنَا؟ قَالَ الْآخَرُ إِذَا رَفَعْنَا يَسْمَعُ وَإِذَا خَفَضْنَا لَمْ يَسْمَعْ فَقَالَ الْآخَرُ إِنْ كَانَ يَسْمَعُ إِذَا رَفَعْنَا فَإِنَّهُ يَسْمَعُ إِذَا خَفَضْنَا فَأَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {وَمَا كُنْتُمُ تَسْتَتِرُونَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُودُكُمْ وَلَكِنْ ظَنَنْتُمْ أَنَّ اللهَ لَا يَعْلَمُ كَثِيرًا مِمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ} إِلَى قَوْلِهِ {مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ} هَكَذَا رَوَاهُ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ وَخَالَفَهُ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَصْحَابُ الْأَعْمَشِ
English Translation
'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: I was concealed behind the curtains of the Ka'bah when three men came — a Thaqafi and his two sons-in-law who were from Quraysh — their bellies were fleshy but their understanding was meager. They conversed amongst themselves. One of them said: "Do you think Allah hears what we say?" The other said: "When we raise our voices He hears, and when we lower them He does not hear." The third said: "If He hears when we raise our voices, then He hears when we lower them." So I came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and mentioned this to him, and Allah Most High revealed: "And you did not conceal yourselves lest your hearing, your sight, or your skins testify against you, but you assumed that Allah does not know much of what you do" (41:22) — to His saying: "among the losers."
