Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:867 حَدَّثَنَا الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ الْخَطَّابِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ لُوَيْنٌ ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْكَبِيرِ الْغِفَارِيِّ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي عُدَيْسَةُ بِنْتُ أُهْبَانَ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا ؓ أَتَى أَبَاهَا فَقَامَ عَلَى الْبَابِ فَاسْتَأْذَنَ وَقَالَ يَا أَبَا مُسْلِمٍ مَا يَمْنَعُكَ أَنْ تَجِدَّ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ وَتَأْخُذَ مِنْهُ بِنَصِيبِكَ؟ قَالَ يَمْنَعُنِي مِنْ ذَلِكَ عَهْدٌ عَهِدَهُ إِلَيَّ خَلِيلِي وَابْنُ عَمِّكَ �� «أَمَرَنِي إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْفِتْنَةُ أَنْ أَتَّخِذَ سَيْفًا مِنْ خَشَبٍ» فَهَا هُوَ ذَا عِنْدِي فَإِنْ شِئْتَ قَاتَلْتُ بِهِ
English Translation
'Udaysah bint Uhban ibn Sayfi narrated that 'Ali came to her father and stood at the door, asked permission, and said: "O Abu Muslim, what prevents you from being serious about this matter and taking your share in it?" He said: "What prevents me from that is a covenant my dear friend and your cousin entrusted to me — he commanded me that when tribulation occurs, I should take a sword of wood. Here it is with me. If you wish, I will fight with it."
