English Translation
'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abu Bakr, and I passed by Ibn Mas'ud while he was reciting. The Prophet stood listening to his recitation. Then 'Abdullah bowed and prostrated. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever would be pleased to recite the Quran as it was revealed, let him recite from Ibn Umm 'Abd." 'Umar said: I went early to Ibn Mas'ud to give him the glad tidings of what the Messenger of Allah said. When I knocked on the door, he heard my voice and said: "What brings you?" I said: "I came to give you glad tidings of what the Messenger of Allah said." He said: "Abu Bakr has beaten you to it." I said: "If he did, he is foremost in good deeds — I never raced Abu Bakr to any good without him beating me to it."
