English Translation
Talha ibn Amr said: When a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and had no acquaintance in Medina to stay with, he would stay with the People of the Suffah. I had companions among them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) would provide every day between two of us two mudds of dates. While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was in one of the prayers, a caller from among his companions called out: 'O Messenger of Allah, the dates have burned our stomachs and our garments have worn out.' When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) finished the prayer, he stood and praised Allah and extolled Him, then mentioned the hardship he had suffered from his people, saying: 'My two companions and I spent more than ten days with no food except al-barir (wild berries), until we came to our brothers from the Ansar, and they shared their food with us, and the main part of their food was dates. By the One besides Whom there is no god, if I could find bread and meat for you, I would feed it to you. But perhaps you will reach a time, or those of you who reach it, when people will wear garments like the curtains of the Ka'bah, and large platters of food will be brought to you morning and evening.'
