English Translation
Abu Umamah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent me to my people to call them to Allah the Mighty and Majestic and to present to them the laws of Islam. I came to them when they had already watered their camels, milked them, and drunk. When they saw me, they said: "Welcome, Sudayy ibn 'Ajlan." They said: "We heard you have converted to this man's [religion]." I said: "No, rather I have believed in Allah and His Messenger, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent me to you to present Islam and its laws to you." While we were thus, they brought a bowl of blood, placed it down, and gathered around eating it. They said: "Come, O Sudayy." I said: "Woe to you! I have come to you from the one who forbids this to you with what Allah has revealed to him." They said: "And what did he say?" I said: "This verse was revealed: {Prohibited for you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine...} to His saying {...and that you seek decision through divining arrows}." I kept calling them to Islam but they refused. I said to them: "Woe to you, bring me some water, for I am extremely thirsty." He said: "And I had my turban on." They said: "No, we will let you die of thirst." He said: "So I wrapped myself in my turban and lay my head down and slept in the scorching heat of intense sun. Someone came to me in my sleep with a glass cup more beautiful than any anyone had ever seen, containing a drink more delicious than anything people had ever tasted. He let me drink it, and when I finished drinking, I woke up. By Allah, I was neither thirsty nor did I know thirst after that drink."
