English Translation
Salim ibn 'Ubayd said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fell unconscious during his illness, then he regained consciousness and said: 'Has the time for prayer come?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Tell Bilal to give the call to prayer and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' 'A'ishah said: 'My father is a sensitive man; if you could order someone else to lead the people in prayer.' Then he fell unconscious again, then regained consciousness and said: 'Has the time for prayer come?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Tell Bilal to give the call to prayer and tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' 'A'ishah again said: 'My father is a sensitive man; if you could order someone else to lead the people in prayer.' Then he fell unconscious again, then regained consciousness and said: 'Has the prayer been established?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Bring me someone to lean on.' So Buraydah and another man came, and he leaned on them and went to the mosque. He entered while Abu Bakr was standing leading the people in prayer. Abu Bakr went to step back, but the Messenger of Allah prevented him and was seated beside Abu Bakr until he finished his prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away, 'Umar said: 'I will not hear any man say the Messenger of Allah has died except that I will strike him with my sword.' Salim took his arm and supported him, and he walked until they came. He said: 'Make room,' and they made room for him. He leaned over the Prophet, touched him, and recited: 'Verily you will die, and verily they will die.' They said: 'O companion of the Messenger of Allah, has the Messenger of Allah died?' He said: 'Yes.' So they knew it was as he said. They said: 'Should we pray over the Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'How shall we pray over him?' He said: 'Groups enter, make takbir, supplicate, pray, then leave, and others come until all are done.' They said: 'Should the Messenger of Allah be buried?' He said: 'Yes.' They said: 'Where should he be buried?' He said: 'Where he was taken (died), for Allah did not take him except in a pure spot.' So they knew it was as he said. Then he said: 'Your companion is with you,' and he ordered them to wash him. Then he went out, and the Muhajirun gathered and consulted. They said: 'Let us go to our brothers from the Ansar, for they have a share in this matter.' So they went. A man from the Ansar said: 'A leader from us and a leader from you.' So 'Umar took Abu Bakr's hand and said: 'Tell me, who has these three qualities: "The second of two when they were in the cave" — who are the two? "When he said to his companion, Do not grieve" — who is his companion? "Indeed Allah is with us" — ' Then he took Abu Bakr's hand and struck it and said to the people: 'Pledge allegiance to him.' So they pledged allegiance to him — a fine and beautiful pledge."
