English Translation
Sahl ibn Sa'd said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out to reconcile between Banu 'Amr ibn 'Awf regarding something that had happened between them, to the point they had thrown stones at each other. The prayer time came and Bilal called the adhan. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was delayed, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward to lead the people in prayer. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived and began passing through the rows. When he reached the row behind Abu Bakr, the people began clapping. Abu Bakr was a man who did not turn around in prayer, but when he heard that, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gestured to him to stay. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his head to the sky in gratitude to Allah, then stepped backward. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stepped forward. When he finished the prayer, he turned to us and said: "O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from staying when I gestured to you?" He said: "It was not for Allah to see the son of Abu Quhafah in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) turned to the people and said: "O people, why is it that when something happened to you in your prayer, you began clapping? Clapping is for women and saying SubhanAllah is for men. Whoever is troubled by something in his prayer, let him say SubhanAllah."
