English Translation
Zayd ibn Arqam said: We went on a military expedition with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and there were some Bedouins with us who would race ahead. A Bedouin would reach the watering place first, fill the basin, place stones around it, and lay a leather mat over it until his companions arrived. An Ansari man went to a Bedouin and loosened his camel's rein so it could drink, but the Bedouin refused. The Ansari pulled out a stone, and the water drained. The Bedouin had a stick and struck the Ansari on his head, wounding him. He went to 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy, the chief of the hypocrites, and informed him. 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy became angry and said: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse from around him" — meaning the Bedouins who would come to the Messenger of Allah at mealtimes. Then 'Abdullah said to his companions: "When they disperse from Muhammad, bring Muhammad the food and let him and those with him eat." Then he said: "When you return to Madinah, the mightier shall expel the lowlier." Zayd said: I was riding behind my uncle, and I heard 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy — we were his maternal relatives. I told my uncle, and he went and informed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah sent for him, but he swore and denied it. The Messenger of Allah believed him and disbelieved me. My uncle came and said: "You only wanted the Messenger of Allah to detest you and the Muslims to disbelieve you." Such grief fell upon me as had never fallen upon anyone. While I was traveling with the Messenger of Allah on a journey, my head drooping from grief, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came to me, tweaked my ear, and laughed in my face. I would not have traded that for eternity in this world. Then Abu Bakr caught up with me and asked: "What did the Messenger of Allah say to you?" I said: "He said nothing except that he tweaked my ear and laughed in my face." He said: "Rejoice!" Then 'Umar caught up with me, and I told him the same. When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited Surah al-Munafiqun (Chapter 63).
