Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:4808 حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ يَحْيَى السَّاجِيُّ ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الْغَطَفَانِيُّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ قَوْمٍ اخْتَلَفُوا فِي صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَأَنَا أَصْغَرُ الْقَوْمِ فَبَعَثُونِي إِلَى زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ لِأَسْأَلَهُ عَنْ صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يُصَلِّي الظُّهْرَ بِالْهَاجِرَةِ وَالنَّاسُ فِي قَائِلَتِهِمْ وَأَسْوَاقِهِمْ فَلَمْ يَكُنْ يُصَلِّي وَرَاءَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ إِلَّا الصَّفُّ وَالصَّفُّ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ} فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «لَيَنْتَهِيَنَّ أَقْوَامٌ أَوْ لَأُحَرِّقَنَّ بُيُوتَهُمْ»
English Translation
Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib said: I was with a group who disagreed about the middle prayer (al-salat al-wusta), and I was the youngest among them. They sent me to Zayd ibn Thabit to ask him about the middle prayer. I went and asked him. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to pray Dhuhr at midday when the people were resting and in their markets. Only a row or two would pray behind the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, revealed: 'Guard strictly the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah devoutly obedient' (2:238). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Certain people must stop (missing the prayer), or I will burn their houses.'"
