Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:3633 حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ ثنا سُفْيَانُ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي حَازِمٍ قَالَ أَتَيْنَا خَبَّابًا نَعُودُهُ وَقَدِ اكْتَوَى فِي بَطْنِهِ سَبْعًا فَقَالَ لَوْلَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ «نَهَى أَنْ نَدْعُوَ بِالْمَوْتِ لَدَعَوْتُ بِهِ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ مَنْ مَضَى مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ أَنَّهُمْ مَضَوْا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلُوا مِنْ أُجُورِهِمْ شَيْئًا وَإِنَّا بَقِينَا بَعْدَهُمْ حَتَّى نِلْنَا مِنَ الدُّنْيَا مَا لَا يَدْرِي أَحَدُنَا مَا يَصْنَعُ بِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يُنْفِقَهُ فِي التُّرَابِ وَأَنَّ الْمُسْلِمَ لَيُؤْجَرُ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَنْفَقَهُ إِلَّا مَا أَنْفَقَهُ فِي التُّرَابِ»
English Translation
Qays ibn Abi Hazim said: 'We came to Khabbab to visit him, and he had been cauterized seven times on his stomach. He said: Were it not that the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us from wishing for death, I would have wished for it. Then he mentioned those who had passed from his companions - that they departed without consuming any of their rewards, and that we remained after them until we obtained from this world that which none of us knows what to do with except spend it on building. Indeed a Muslim is rewarded for everything he spends except what he spends on building.'
