English Translation
Narrated al-Harith ibn Dirar al-Khuza'i: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he called me to Islam. I embraced it and affirmed it. He called me to pay Zakat, and I affirmed it. I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, let me return to my people and call them to Islam and payment of Zakat. Whoever responds, I will collect their Zakat. Then send, O Messenger of Allah, a messenger at such-and-such a time to collect what I have gathered.' When al-Harith gathered the Zakat from those who responded and the appointed time came for the Messenger of Allah to send someone, the messenger was delayed. Al-Harith thought that displeasure from Allah and His Messenger had occurred regarding him. He called the leaders of his people and said, 'The Messenger of Allah had set a time to send his messenger to collect the Zakat, and the Messenger of Allah does not break his word. I see no reason for the delay except displeasure. Let us go to the Messenger of Allah.' Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah to al-Harith to collect the Zakat. When al-Walid had traveled partway, he became afraid and returned, telling the Messenger of Allah, 'Al-Harith refused to pay Zakat and wanted to kill me.' The Messenger of Allah dispatched an expedition to al-Harith. Al-Harith came with his companions, and when they met the expedition, al-Harith asked, 'To whom were you sent?' They said, 'To you.' He said, 'Why?' They said, 'The Messenger of Allah sent al-Walid ibn Uqbah, who returned claiming you refused Zakat and wanted to kill him.' He said, 'No, by the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I never saw him nor did he come to me. I only came because the messenger was delayed, fearing displeasure from Allah and His Messenger.' Then the verse of al-Hujurat was revealed: {O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with news, verify it, lest you harm a people in ignorance and then regret what you have done} up to {a grace from Allah and a favor, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.}'
