English Translation
Al-Sha'bi said: I witnessed al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Nakhilah when Mu'awiyah made peace with him. Mu'awiyah said to him: "Stand up and address the people, and inform them that you have handed this matter over to me." Al-Hasan stood and gave a sermon from the pulpit. He praised Allah and lauded Him. Al-Sha'bi said: I was listening. Then he said: "As for what follows — indeed, the wisest wisdom is piety, and the most foolish folly is wickedness. This matter over which Mu'awiyah and I have differed — either it was a right of mine that I relinquished to Mu'awiyah for the sake of the welfare of this community and the sparing of their blood, or it was a right that belonged to someone more entitled to it than me, and I acted accordingly. 'And I know not; perhaps it is a trial for you and an enjoyment for a time' (21:111)."
