English Translation
Thawban said: Forty men from the Companions gathered to discuss predestination and free will, among them Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). Then the Trustworthy Spirit, Jibril (peace be upon him), descended and said: "O Muhammad, go out to your community, for they have innovated." So he went out to them at an hour he did not normally come out, and they recognized that something was unusual. He came out with changed complexion, his cheeks flushed as if pomegranate seeds were bursting from them. They rushed to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) with their sleeves rolled up, their hands and arms trembling, and said: "We repent to Allah and His Messenger!" He said: "Close call! You nearly incurred (a grave consequence). The Trustworthy Spirit came to me and said: 'Go out to your community, O Muhammad, for they have innovated.'"
