Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:1320 حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمُعَلَّى الدِّمَشْقِيُّ ثنا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ثنا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ الْخُرَاسَانِيِّ قَالَ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فَسَأَلْتُ عَمَّنْ يُحَدِّثُنِي بِحَدِيثِ ثَابِتِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ فَأَرْشَدُونِي إِلَى ابْنَتِهِ فَسَأَلْتُهَا فَقَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي يَقُولُ لَمَّا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ {إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ مُخْتَالٍ فَخُورٍ} اشْتَدَّتْ عَلَى ثَابِتٍ وَغَلَّقَ عَلَيْهِ بَابَهُ وَطَفِقَ يَبْكِي فَأُخْبِرَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَسَأَلَهُ فَأَخْبَرَهُ بِمَا كَبُرَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْهَا وَقَالَ أَنَا رَجُلٌ أُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ وَأَنْ أَسُودَ قَوْمِي فَقَالَ «لَسْتَ مِنْهُمْ بَلْ تَعِيشُ بِخَيْرٍ وتَمُوتُ بِخَيْرٍ ويُدْخِلُكَ اللهُ الْجَنَّةَ» قَالَ فَلَمَّا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَلَى رَسُولهِ ﷺ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا لَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ} فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَأُخْبِرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ بِمَا كَبُرَ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَّهُ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ وَأَنَّهُ يَتَخَوَّفُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِمَّنْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ مِنْهُمْ بَلْ تَعِيشُ حَمِيدًا وتُقْتَلُ شَهِيدًا ويُدْخِلُكَ اللهُ الْجَنَّةَ» فَلَمَّا اسْتَنْفَرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الرِّدَّةِ وَالْيَمَامَةِ ومُسَيْلَمَةَ الْكَذَّابِ سَارَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِيمَنْ سَارَ فَلَمَّا لَقُوا مُسَيْلِمَةَ وَبَنِي حَنِيفَةَ هَزَمُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ وَسَالِمٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ مَا هَكَذَا كُنَّا نُقَاتِلُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ فَوْقَ صَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ وَلَا تَجْهَرُوا لَهُ بِالْقَوْلِ} فَعَلَ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ فَأُخْبِرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ بِمَا كَبُرَ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنَّهُ جَهِيرُ الصَّوْتِ وَأَنَّهُ يَتَخَوَّفُ أَنْ يَكُونَ مِمَّنْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُهُ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ «إِنَّكَ لَسْتَ مِنْهُمْ بَلْ تَعِيشُ حَمِيدًا وتُقْتَلُ شَهِيدًا ويُدْخِلُكَ اللهُ الْجَنَّةَ» فَلَمَّا اسْتَنْفَرَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ الْمُسْلِمِينَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الرِّدَّةِ وَالْيَمَامَةِ ومُسَيْلَمَةَ الْكَذَّابِ سَارَ ثَابِتُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فِيمَنْ سَارَ فَلَمَّا لَقُوا مُسَيْلِمَةَ وَبَنِي حَنِيفَةَ هَزَمُوا الْمُسْلِمِينَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ فَقَالَ ثَابِتٌ وَسَالِمٌ مَوْلَى أَبِي حُذَيْفَةَ مَا هَكَذَا كُنَّا نُقَاتِلُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلَا لِأَنْفُسِهما حُفْرَةً فَدَخَلَا فِيهَا فَقَاتَلَا حَتَّى قُتِلَا قَالَتْ وَأُرِيَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ ثَابِتَ بْنَ قَيْسٍ فِي مَنَامِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَمَّا قُتِلْتُ بِالْأَمْسِ مَرَّ بِي رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَانْتَزَعَ مِنِّي دِرْعًا نَفِيسَةً وَمَنْزِلُهُ فِي أَقْصَى الْمُعَسْكَرِ وَعِنْدَ مَنْزِلِهِ فَرَسٌ يَسْتَنُّ فِي طُولِهِ وَقَدْ أَكْفَأَ عَلَى الدِّرْعِ بُرْمَةً وَجَعَلَ فَوْقَ الْبُرْمَةِ رَحْلًا وَائْتِ خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فَلْيَبْعَثْ إِلَى دِرْعِي فَلْيَأْخُذْهَا فَإِذَا قَدِمْتَ عَلَى خَلِيفَةِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَأَعْلِمْهُ أَنَّ عَلَيَّ مِنَ الدَّيْنِ كَذَا وَلِي مِنَ الْمَالِ كَذَا وَفُلَانُ مِنْ رَقِيقِي عَتِيقٌ وَإِيَّاكَ أَنْ تَقُولَ هَذَا حُلْمٌ فَتُضَيِّعَهُ قَالَ فَأَتَى خَالِدَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ فَوَجَّهُ إِلَى الدِّرْعِ فَوَجَدَهَا كَمَا ذَكَرَ وَقَدِمَ عَلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ ؓ فَأَخْبَرَهُ فَأَنْفَذَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ وَصِيَّتَهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ فَلَا نَعْلَمُ أَنَّ أَحَدًا جَازَتْ وَصِيَّتُهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهِ إِلَّا ثَابِتَ بْنَ قَيْسِ بْنِ شَمَّاسٍ ؓ
English Translation
The daughter of Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas narrated: When the verse "Indeed, Allah does not love every self-conceited boaster" (31:18) was revealed, it weighed heavily upon Thabit. He shut himself inside his house and began to weep. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was told, so he sent for him and asked him. He told him what troubled him and said: "I am a man who loves beauty and to be the leader of my people." He said: "You are not among them. Rather, you will live in goodness, die in goodness, and Allah will enter you into Paradise." When the verse was revealed: "O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet" (49:2), he did the same. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was told, so he sent for him, and Thabit told him what troubled him — that he had a loud voice and feared he was among those whose deeds had been nullified. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You are not among them. Rather, you will live praised, be killed as a martyr, and Allah will enter you into Paradise." When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) mobilized the Muslims against the people of apostasy and Yamamah and Musaylimah the Liar, Thabit ibn Qays marched among those who marched. When they met Musaylimah and Banu Hanifah, they defeated the Muslims three times. Thabit and Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, said: "This is not how we used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)." So they dug a trench for themselves and entered it, fighting until they were killed. A man among the Muslims saw Thabit ibn Qays in a dream, and he said: "When I was killed yesterday, a man from the Muslims passed by me and took from me a valuable armor. His dwelling is at the far end of the camp, and near his dwelling is a horse prancing on its tether. He has placed a pot over the armor and placed a saddle on top of the pot. Go to Khalid ibn al-Walid and tell him to send for my armor. And when you come to the Khalifah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), inform him that I owe such-and-such debt, and I have such-and-such wealth, and so-and-so from my slaves is freed. And beware of saying 'this is just a dream' and neglecting it." So he went to Khalid ibn al-Walid, who sent for the armor and found it as he had described. He came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him, and Abu Bakr carried out his bequest after his death. We do not know of anyone whose bequest was carried out after his death except Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him).
