Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:12454 حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ثنا عُبَادَةُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْأَسَدِيُّ ثنا قَيْسُ بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ أَبِي وَحْشِيَّةَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ {وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ سَبِيلًا} قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ «إِذَا صَلَّى بِهِمْ جَهَرَ بِالْقُرْآنِ» فَإِذَا سَمِعَهُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ سَبُّوهُ وَسَبُّوا مَنْ جَاءَ بِهِ فَأَوْحَى اللهُ إِلَيْهِ {وَلَا تَجْهَرْ بِصَلَاتِكَ} فَيَسْمَعُهُ الْمُشْرِكُونَ فَيَسُبُّوهُ {وَلَا تُخَافِتْ بِهَا} قَالَ «أَسْمِعْ أَصْحَابَكَ» {وَابْتَغِ بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ سَبِيلًا}
English Translation
Regarding the verse: {And do not recite your prayer too loudly or too softly, but seek a way between}, Ibn Abbas said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when he prayed with them, would recite the Quran loudly. When the polytheists heard it, they would abuse it and abuse the one who brought it. So Allah revealed to him: {And do not recite your prayer too loudly} so that the polytheists hear it and abuse it, {nor too softly} — He said: make your Companions hear it — {but seek a way between.}'
