English Translation
Jews came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: 'O Abu al-Qasim, we will ask you about some things. If you answer them, we will follow you, believe you, and have faith in you.' He took the same covenant from them that Israel (Ya'qub) took upon himself. They said: 'Allah is witness to what we say.' They said: 'Tell us about the sign of the Prophet.' He said: 'His eyes sleep but his heart does not.' They said: 'Tell us how a woman conceives a female and how she conceives a male.' He said: 'The two fluids meet; if the woman's fluid prevails over the man's, it is a female, and if the man's fluid prevails over the woman's, it is a male.' They said: 'You speak the truth.' They said: 'Tell us about thunder, what is it?' He said: 'An angel from the angels who is entrusted with the clouds, directing them wherever Allah wills.' They said: 'What is this sound that is heard?' He said: 'It is his driving of the clouds when he drives them until they reach where he has been commanded.' They said: 'You speak the truth.' They said: 'Tell us what Israel (Ya'qub) forbade upon himself.' He said: 'He lived in the desert and fell ill, and he found nothing that agreed with him except camel meat and milk, so for that reason he forbade them.' They said: 'You speak the truth.' They said: 'Tell us, who comes to you from the angels? For there is no prophet except that an angel comes to him with the message and revelation. Who is your companion? This is the only thing remaining.' He said: 'Jibril (peace be upon him).' They said: 'That is the one who comes down with war and fighting; he is our enemy. If you had said Mika'il, who comes down with rain, we would have followed you.' So Allah revealed: {Say: Whoever is an enemy to Jibril...} the verse.
